5 Foods & Drinks for Your Mood
When a bad mood strikes, how can you beat it? Sure, you can meditate, exercise, step outside or do a good deed to boost your mood. But did you also know you can eat (or drink) your way to a better frame of mind, too?
It’s not junk food that’ll put a smile on your face, either. Check out this list of mood-boosting foods and drinks -- they give a whole new meaning to the term comfort food!
Salmon
Packed with healthy fats from omega-3 essential fatty acids, salmon can support the brain’s neurotransmitters responsible for happy feelings; plus, it can help protect against damaging inflammation. Enjoy this mild fish as a main dish with veggies or over a salad.
Flaxseed
Not a fan of fish? Flax is another source of mood-supporting omega-3 essential fatty acids. You can consume them in many different ways: sprinkled over yogurt, added to homemade bread dough, added to your smoothie or ground and mixed with water to create an egg substitute for baking.
Green tea
One of the most popular beverages in the world, green tea is made from the leaves of the Camelia sinensis plant. Green tea contains antioxidants (specifically, EGCG or epigallocatechin gallate), as well as the amino acid L-theanine, which may be associated with a feeling of calm.
Dark chocolate
Who wouldn’t feel better after nibbling on a piece of dark chocolate? In addition to being delicious, dark chocolate actually contains protective antioxidants, and may stimulate the brain’s production of feel-good chemical serotonin. Look for a variety with 70%+ cacao content and be mindful of your serving size (just a small square will do!).
