7 Healthy Morning Habits to Start Your Day

When your alarm goes off, do you leap up out of bed ready to tackle your day? Or are you more likely to groan, “ten more minutes” as you hit snooze and turn over? Even if you’re not a morning person, you probably know deep down that a healthy morning can be the perfect foundation for a great day.  

So how can you start your day with healthy habits without cutting into your precious beauty sleep? We’ve gathered some of the easiest and quickest ways to make your morning routine healthier than ever:

  1. Stretch. A sunrise yoga class isn’t mandatory for a healthy morning (though, if you do have the time, give it a try!). Just a few simple stretches will help increase circulation throughout your body to wake you up and help you regain your range of motion. 
  • Before getting out of bed, reach your arms behind you and extend both your arms and your legs as far as they’ll go while releasing the world’s biggest yawn (you probably do already this stretch without even thinking about it!).
  • Sit on the bed, setting your feet on the floor, then reach towards your feet, arching your back and shoulders.
  • Once you get out of bed, stand with your feet slightly apart and your hands at your side. Inhale as you sweep your arms upward, extending them to the ceiling.
  • Drink water. It may sound almost too simple, but a tall glass of H2O can curb morning dehydration and kickstart your energy for the day. For an extra boost of flavor and antioxidants, add a few slices of fresh lemon.
  • Eat something! Tempted to save time by skipping breakfast? Your mom always told you breakfast was the most important meal of the day, so don’t miss out. A balanced morning meal with protein, carbs and healthy fats is ideal to keep you nourished and satisfied ‘til lunchtime. It doesn’t have to be fancy, either: plain yogurt topped with berries and toast with nut butter and banana slices will do the trick.
  • Do some basic prep. No time to toast bread in the a.m.? Try a meal you can make the night before, like overnight oats. (Just soak them in water or milk and store in the fridge, then add your preferred toppings when you wake up!) You can also lay out your clothes for the day and pack your lunch the night before, to avoid common morning stressors. (This won’t help with the toddler who refuses to get dressed, but it’ll give you more time to deal with it!)
  • Put down your phone. This healthy morning habit is actually about breaking a bad one. If the first thing you usually do is pick up your phone to answer an email or check the news, consider setting it aside. Your phone can be a distraction from the things you truly need to do you before you start your day, and can also deprive you of valuable morning “me” time.
